DJ Earl è il futuro del Footwork, anche se ancora non lo sappiamo, anche se parlare di futuro per una sottocultura che dalle nostre parti ancora oggi rimane di nicchia può sembrare quantomeno anacronistico. Dobbiamo guardare in faccia la realtà per quello che è, anche a queste latitudini: a più d’un lustro dalla creazione dell’asse UK-USA (complici Planet Mu e Hyperdub) il suono della Chicago che balla a 160 bpm è ormai un diktat riconosciuto in tutto il Vecchio Continente e dobbiamo capirlo per poterlo eventualmente apprezzare.
Quella di questo weekend è un’occasione irripetibile: passa infatti dal Brancaleone di Roma il tour promozionale di “Open Your Eyes”, album di debutto di DJ Earl che assume un significato particolare per la scena e per il nostro paese sotto molti punti di vista: non un semplice live, quello che ci aspetta (grazie agli amici di Amen per tutto questo), ma un vero footwork show, una dedica alla cultura della Windy City che vede protagonista un album di debutto sia per Teklife, collettivo diventato a tutti gli effetti un etichetta, sia per lo stesso Earl, al debutto sulla lunga distanza e con endorsement importanti come quelli di Oneohtrix Point Never (che ne ha curato il mixing, oltre a collaborare in fase produttiva) e della leggenda vivente Obey Giant (creatore, assieme alla bravissima Ashes57, del concept grafico e dell’artwork dell’album).
Un’occasione irripetibile, dicevamo, che da queste parti abbiamo pensato di sottendere chiedendo allo stesso DJ Earl una playlist di 10 tracce, 10 fonti d’ispirazione che ne hanno condizionato l’approccio durante la stesura di questa prima “lunga prova” chiamata “Open Your Eyes”.
