Con la sensuale e delicata commistione di elettronica ed RnB che contraddistingue le sue produzioni, la producer e songwriter canadese beniamina americana della Hyperdub Jessy Lanza ha saputo nel corso degli anni stregare indistintamente pubblico e critica. Ospite fisso delle pagine di Tsinoshi Bar, vi avevamo parlato poco tempo fa della sua ultima release, Oh no no no, trittico di remix che vede all’opera Morgan Geist, la coppia DJ Taso & DJ Spinn e Scratcha DVA.

In occasione della sua unica data italiana al Locomotiv di Bologna il 17 Marzo abbiamo deciso di farle qualche domanda sulle sue ultime uscite e il suo rapporto con la vita in tour.

Ciao Jessy, è un piacere averti qui a Tsinoshi Bar! Vedo che hai cominciato un tour intenso che ti porterà sia in America che in Europa, incluse alcune città in cui non hai mai suonato, ti piace andare in tour?

Mi piace andare in tour perché posso suonare dal vivo e questo è qualcosa che ho sempre voluto fare

 

Cosa devono aspettarsi i fans da una tua performance live? Com’e’ il setting sul palco?

Be’ canto suono e ballo al meglio che posso. I live sono divertenti perché sono imprevedibili ed essendo una persona a cui non piace non sapere cosa sta succedendo penso mi faccia bene essere in una situazione in cui le cose possono andare un po’ fuori controllo.

 

Raccontaci qualcosa della tua ultima uscita, i remix Oh No No No: come sono arrivate queste collaborazioni?

Dj Taye era in tour con noi in Nord America a giugno quindi gli ho chiesto in quell’occasione se voleva fare un remix di una delle tracce dell’album. Sono una grande fan di Morgan Geist e stavamo cercando di fare qualcos’altro insieme dopo che io ho cantato nel suo progetto The Galleria uscito nel 2015. Anche io e Scratcha DVA abbiamo sempre voluto fare qualcosa insieme, quindi quando mi ha detto che gli piaceva un sacco la traccia Going Somewhere da Oh No gli ho chiesto se voleva fare un remix.

 

Quali sono state le principali differenze nel lavorare alla produzione di Pull My Hair Back rispetto a Oh No? In quest’ultimo c’è sicuramente un’atmosfera diversa, più energetica rispetto a Pull My Hair Back, ed ho letto che hai lavorato un sacco nel guadagnare confidenza con la tua voce e la scrittura dei testi

Sì ho avuto qualche difficoltà quando abbiamo cominciato a lavorare a Oh no. Blocco dello scrittore credo, ma ero un po’ schizzata per chissà quale ragione, mi sentivo insicura, ma poi a un certo punto mi sono stancata di sclerare e sentirmi così nella mia testa. Mi sono accorta che se alle persone non piace la prossima cosa che farò va bene lo stesso e che continuerò a far musica in ogni caso. Dopo questo ho smesso di preoccuparmi e fare il disco è diventato divertente.

 

Nel 2015 hai lavorato al Calling Card EP con Morgan Geist, dicci qualcosa di più su questo progetto e sul tuo rapporto con Morgan.

Penso che Morgan sia uno dei migliori songwriters che conosca. Spero che riusciremo a fare di più insieme in futuro.

 

Qual’e’ il tuo rapporto con la musica pop?

Amo la musica pop! Di qualsiasi genere e periodo.

 

Hai cominciato una residenza alla BBC Radio 1 a Gennaio, come lavori alla selezione delle tracce?

Ho ascoltato un sacco di musica nuova che è una buona cosa per me perché a volte resto bloccata in una monotonia fatta di musica funk anni ‘80 che è difficile rompere.

 

Ci sono artisti contemporanei che ammiri o ispirano il tuo lavoro?

Si certo! Morgan Geist, Junior Boys, Caribou, Anamai , DJ Taye , Taso , Spinn.

 

Si può dire che negli ultimi anni è stato costruito un ponte fra la musica elettronica inglese e quella americana (penso per esempio all’amore della Hyperdub per il footwork o a Drake che firma con la Boy Bettern Know di Skepta), e includerei anche te all’interno di questo processo, cosa ne pensi?

Sì, posso vederlo, anche se onestamente non me ne intendo molto di musica da club inglese, che è buffo considerato che sono segnata con la Hyperdub.

 

Sei stata piuttosto esplicita rispetto all’essere una donna in un mondo tipicamente dominato dagli uomini (a volte la musica elettronica finisce con l’essere un po’ un sausage-party): pensi che la situazione stia migliorando?

Sarà certamente meglio quando non ci sarà più bisogno di fare queste domande, quando non sentirò più parlare di violenza nei club o di persone che non si sentono al sicuro in quegli spazi per chi sono o per il loro aspetto.

 

Hai qualche nuova uscita programmata? Qualche nuova collaborazione?

Sì sto lavorando a della musica nuova! Con Jeremy Greenspan [dei Junior Boys N.d.T.] e altri ma dovrete aspettare e vedere.

Hi Jessy, it’s a pleasure to have you here at Tsinoshi Bar! I saw that you’re about to start an intense tour that will bring you both in US and Eu, including some locations you never performed before; do you enjoy touring?

I do like touring because I get to play shows and that’s something i’ve wanted to do for a long time.

 

What do fans have to expect form your live performance? How’s the live setting?

Well i sing and play and bop around as best as I can. Live settings are good because it’s unpredictable and as a person who doesn’t like to not know what’s going on I think it’s good for me to be in a situation where things could get a little out of control.

 

Tell us something about your latest release, the Oh No No No remixes: how did those collaborations came about?

Dj Taye was on a north american tour with us in June so I asked him then if he would do a remix of one of the album tracks. I’m a huge fan of Morgan Geist and we were looking to do something together after I sang on his Galleria project that came out in 2015. Scratcha DVA and I have always wanted to do something together as well, so when he said he really liked the track Going Somewhere from Oh No I asked if he wanted to do a remix.

 

What were the main differences in working on the production of Pull My Hair Back compared to Oh No? In the latter there’s definitely a different, more energetic atmosphere compared to Pull My Hair Back, and I’ve read you worked a lot on confidence over your voice and writing the lyrics.

Yeah i had a bit of a tough time when we started working on Oh No. writers block i guess but I was a bit freaked out for whatever reason, feeling insecure, but then eventually I got tired of spazzing out about it and being so in my head. i realized that if people don’t like the next thing i do that’s fine and i’ll keep making music anyway. after that i stopped caring and making the record became fun.

 

In 2015 you worked at the Calling Card EP with Morgan Geist, tell us more about this project and your relationship with Morgan.

I think Morgan is one of the best songwriters I know, so it was really great to get to sing on his songs. I’m hoping we’ll be able to do more in the future.

 

What’s your relationship with pop music?

I love pop music! all different time periods and genres.

 

You started a BBC Radio 1 Residency in January , how are you working on the selection of the tracks?

Well i’ve been listening to lots of new music which is good for me because sometimes i get stuck in an 80’s funk rut that’s hard to break out of.

 

Are there any current artists that you really admire or inspire your work?

Yeah for sure! Morgan Geist, Junior Boys, Caribou, Anamai , DJ Taye , TASO , Spinn.

 

There’s definitely been a bridge that has been built between the Uk and US electronic music in the latest years (I’m thinking about Hyperdub love for footwork or Drake signing to BBK), and I would include you as well as part of this process: what do you think?

Yeah i can see that although honestly i’ve never been familiar with English club music which is funny because i’m signed to Hyperdub.

 

You’ve been quite vocal about being a woman in a typically male-dominated world (sometimes electronic music tend to be a sausage-party kind of situation): do you think is getting any better?

It will be certifiably better when the question isn’t asked. when i don’t hear about violence in clubs or people feeling unsafe in those spaces because of who they are or how they look.

 

What’s up next? Do you have any release planned? Any new collaboration?

I am working on new music yes! with Jeremy Greenspan [from the Junior Boys] and others but u have to wait and see.
